Divine Agbeko is a digital collage artist and graphic design student from McAllen, Texas. By allowing her vibrant ensembles to breathe among open negative space, Divine’s work results in inventive new arrangements that evoke feelings of fertility and lightness. “I quickly get so many ideas from the images that I see and immediately I'm eager to create something.”
Divine initially turned to art-making as a way to improve her design skills. Collaging proved to be a fun practice through which she could hone in on the different features of computer programs like Photoshop. Since beginning her studies, she has grown passionate about the art of taking various elements and creating something freshly her own. “It feels wonderful to take up some space in the collaging field.”
The artist gains inspiration from art community websites like Tumblr and Pinterest, and believes that her source images often determine the direction of her works. She is also motivated by her artist friends. “I am always in awe of their work and thankful for how they make me feel. It makes me want to contribute something, too.”
Divine describes her favorite work, My Alice in Wonderland, as a piece that is both odd and compelling. “I was so excited to see what would come of it after I had selected my subject—it came out so much better than my initial vision for it.”
Divine aspires to further develop her style and discover her capabilities as an artist. “I'm so eager to keep going! It's one of the easiest things to give my time to.”
Divine perceives BLM as a call for permanent change. “People like me should never have to have their lives be a political issue. This is not a debate. I deserve to never have to worry about my safety and security.”
She believes that the RGV can take on a significant role in fostering the movement's goals. “I'd love to see the valley become a more nurturing and welcoming space for anybody and everybody. It would be wonderful for any person to happily call this place their home because they were able to find communities that support them.”
