Sandrine Agbeko is a digital illustrator. Her goal as an artist is to improve her drawing skills in pursuit of a future career in animation and storyboarding.
As a self-described introvert, Sandrine explains that she creates in order to show the world who she is. “It’s very hard for my ideas to be expressed vocally,” she says. “For as long as I can remember, drawing has been something that I could resort to as a source of encouragement and inspiration.”
Sandrine started drawing at an early age using ink pens and pencils, but over time grew inspired from watching digital speed-paint videos on YouTube and made the switch. Her unique illustration style is largely influenced by her love for anime. She is inspired by her favorite anime shows, such as Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Haikyuu!, as well as by artist Instagram accounts like @racketballs,@robopeezy, and @ore_ore_ore. “I like to incorporate the character designs from these sources to help develop my own art style.”
Her favorite piece to date is "2/MANY" which features a man wearing a red jacket against a neon purple background. “I love this piece so much because it’s the first time I have successfully drawn an angled image,” she says, a technique she struggles with and is proud to have pulled off.
To Sandrine, #BlackLivesMatter means “fighting for the justice and equality that black people have desired for many years.” Further, she believes it is imperative that non-Blacks educate themselves on the injustices in African American history so that they can be better help to the cause.
Sandrine is from McAllen, Texas. “The change that I wish to see in the RGV is for black people to be valued just as much as people value black culture.”
